Residents, health experts and lawmakers agree that heroin addiction is an epidemic in New Jersey. Heroin addiction is common in many of cities in the Garden State. There are many suburbs and small towns in New Jersey that also have a serious heroin addiction problem. One lawmaker and physician is helping pass legislation that will require health insurance companies to provide coverage for pain medications that are designed to reduce addiction.
Assemblyman Herb Conaway says that New Jersey drug addiction is a major problem. One way to combat the heroin epidemic in New Jersey is to make it easier for people to have access to abuse-deterrent pain medications. That is why many lawmakers and citizens believe it’s time to get the insurance providers and pharmaceutical industry involved.
What Are Law Makers Doing To Deter New Jersey Drug Addiction?
Assemblyman Dan Benson and Herb Conaway have co-sponsored a bill that will require insurance companies to provide coverage for opioids analgesic medications. These medications have been approved by the Food And Drug Administration. They cannot be snorted, dissolved or crushed for a quick high, which is why they help deter drug abuse.
This bill was approved by the Assembly Health And Senior Services Committee in June. However, some health insurance companies have opposed this bill. Insurance companies are concerned about the added cost of providing this additional coverage for these medications. They are also concerned that these extra costs will passed onto the consumer.
However, Benson and Conaway have stated that they will be working with stakeholders in order to address problems that may arise. Benson says that he understands that opioid analgesic medications are very expensive without insurance coverage. If insurance companies provide coverage for these medications, then more people will have access to it.
