Co-Occurring Programming at Behavioral Crossroads

Most of you know who we are, but some may not. Behavioral Crossroads was established in 2003 as a Mental Health Partial Care Program. This level of care is intense and the highest form of mental health outpatient therapy which can be 5 hours a day and 5 days a week. It is traditionally structured for immediate medication and therapeutic stabilization for those discharged from inpatient mental health programming. Since 2010, and the launch of our recovery program BCR – Behavioral Crossroads Recovery, at the same location, we have had an elaborate co-occurring program for those that may be substance abuse primary and have a secondary diagnosis in mental health needing treatment and prescriptive support.

Our co-occurring program has an established hierarchy with our Psychiatrist supervising a team of Advanced Practice Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses. We offer direct care in psychiatric evaluations, prescription management and case management for mental health concerns. We do not address in-house medical issues; those needs are always referred out to a client’s primary care physician. This tract –is exclusive to the co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder client. Our co-occurring team includes masters level counselors assigned to clients in this specialty tract that have significant experience in mental health. Our team simultaneously addresses underlying conditions and tries to educate and establish a baseline that correlates our client’s symptoms and history to address the trauma that causes their addiction. Education and understanding of your symptoms are the key to recovery.

We establish a baseline in our treatment planning that addresses all key factors head on. For many substance use disorder clients, clean time creates certain risks in the community for relapse. Medication management for mental health disorders becomes more apparent as individuals feel stress, anxiety, paranoia, and depression that emerge as more and more clean time accumulates. Our co-occurring clients see their counselors individually several hours weekly while they experience the complete treatment continuum. Each client’s treatment plan caters to their specific needs and is reviewed periodically at a 12-16 week bench mark to focus on goals as clients experience our continuum in partial care, intensive outpatient and outpatient levels of care.
